Democratic Rep. Lauren Underwood of Illinois said attacks on the Affordable Care Act could put expecting mothers at greater risk, emphasizing the important of the health overhaul during a hearing on maternal mortality.
“Moms and babies are losing their lives and unacceptably high rates in the United States…We know that in the context of today’s hearings, coverage leads to better outcomes for moms and babies. And yet as we speak, the Affordable Care Act is being threatened by a Republican repeal lawsuit,” Underwood said.
The United States has a much higher rate of maternal mortality than other wealthy countries, according to a 2019 report by the NIH. And black women are 3 to 4 times more likely to be affected than white women, even when controlling for other factors like age and income.
