Fauci Face Palm was only the start.
The United States has the most confirmed cases of the coronavirus in the world. As the pandemic worsens, there’s a growing sense that this could have all been avoided if the federal government prepared and heeded warnings.
But they didn’t. You know the failures by now:
- President Trump initially declined to pursue more aggressive testing for the disease out of fear that more positive cases would hurt his bid for re-election.
- Trump downplayed the severity of the virus for six weeks, comparing it to the flu.
- The Trump administration ignored a 69-page National Security Council playbook on fighting pandemics. According to that playbook, the government should have begun efforts at least two months ago to obtain personal protective equipment, such as masks, gloves, and gowns. They didn’t. And now, more than two months after the first case appeared in the U.S., doctors and nurses are reporting severe shortages of those supplies.
- The CDC botched the development of its first coronavirus test and while testing has ramped up, the shortage remains massive and has allowed the disease to spread quickly. The Trump administration’s testing failures were so severe that in February, as more people across the U.S. became sick, government labs processed only 352 COVID-19 tests, an average of only 12 per day in a nation of more than 300 million people, according to CDC data.
Those failures are certainly grim, but they’ve also been meme-ified, and even in dark times, we need to laugh. So without further ado, here are some of the best memes about President Trump and his administration’s response to the coronavirus.
