COURIER Hits One Million Email Subscribers

COURIER, a fast-growing pro-democracy digital news network, passed one million email subscribers last month. COURIER publishes email newsletters in ten states across its local news network, featuring a mix of lifestyle and political news delivered straight to readers’ inboxes. The states with the largest email subscriber audiences include Arizona, Michigan, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin. In addition to widely read local newsletters, COURIER is also rapidly growing its slate of national newsletters featuring pro-democracy opinion and analysis, including FWIW by Kyle Tharp and Stop the Presses by former news editor Mark Jacob.

“During a time when local news is on a dangerous decline in America and many local outlets struggle to survive, we are incredibly proud of COURIER’s demonstrated ability to reach new audiences with our local newsletters,” said Tara McGowan, founder and publisher of COURIER. “Our rapid email subscriber growth since our launch in 2019 is a compelling sign that there’s still an appetite for local news — so long as the reporting is packaged and delivered directly to readers in ways that are relevant, engaging, and accessible to their lives and fast-changing consumption habits.  Most of our readers across the country are passive news consumers who don’t actively seek out news, nor are they willing to pay through paywalls, but when good, factual, award-winning local news is delivered straight to their inboxes for free, they are opening and engaging with our content at incredible rates.”

COURIER’s local newsletters receive an average open rate of 47% network-wide, much higher than the media industry average open rate 34%, and COURIER’s growing newsletter audience is complemented by another over 1.3 million Americans who follow COURIER’s local newsrooms’ social channels on TikTok, Instagram, X, Threads, and Facebook. COURIER recently launched its flagship newsletter sponsorship program to provide mission-aligned advertisers with premium access to over one million subscribers.
